Our First “Weird Sighting”
Our first “weird sighting” comes as part of our July 5 road trip to Eastern Iowa. We drove through Backbone State Park, took a selfie (do you sense another pattern), enjoyed the beautiful scenery, and then it happened...we had to even drive by twice (or maybe three times) to snap a photo (and video) for proof. And this is how our string of weird sightings started. It seems we encounter these types of things that never cease to amaze (and amuse) us.

Other weird sightings have included things like “Tag Lady” in Galena (Illinois) where a woman, who was clearly on a date, sat across the table from her suitor with what we dub as the world’s longest shirt tag hanging out of the neck of her shirt and across her shoulder. A group of friends approached the table, and yet no one informed her of the tag. They left Galena Brewing and I swore that if I saw her out walking, I was going to tell her about the tag and help a girl out. Unfortunately, we never did see them again.
We’ve witnessed “Toilet Paper Shoe Guy” outside of Second State Brewing in Cedar Falls (Iowa), which is pretty self explanatory. But, Lars always takes it a step further and stuffed toilet paper in his sock one day to see if I would notice. Never a dull moment. Second State Brewing also brought us, “How you cats doin’?” so now it is not unusual for us to randomly meow at one another. Yes, we know we are weird! ...and we like it that way.
While in Decorah (Iowa) visiting Dunning Falls waterfall with stops at Pulpit Rock and Toppling Goliath Breweries, we got the joy of experiencing “White Mustache Girl” at a local gas station. Keep in mind that this was during the time that wearing masks regularly was coming into reality, but this wasn’t a mask just a random white paper mustache being worn rather proudly. We also visited PIVO Brewery in Calmar on our way home that day.

Rest assured that we will see more weird sightings and share them with you as we journey through this crazy life.

On our way to visit friends in Wisconsin, we ran into “Teddy Bear Van” in Cresco.

And while visiting some breweries in Madison (Wisconsin) we got to experience “Crocheterhosen.” No further explanation necessary. (To this poor guy’s defense, it was Oktoberfest, but still…)
A visit to Barn Town in Des Moines (Iowa) gave our eyes a real treat with guys wearing pajama pants to the bar. We saw “Talk to the Hand COVID Guy” at The Brass Tap in Cedar Falls (Iowa) where apparently just putting your hand in front of your mouth while you talk is just as effective as wearing a mask. Who knows? Maybe this guy was onto something…
I’m “Europeeing” scarred our eyes forever as a guy walked 20 yards away from his vehicle on an off ramp on Highway 20 to urinate while facing traffic. Sure hope we never see anything like that again!
And probably one of the absolute weirdest things we have seen was “Cornucopia Gremlin” in Ankeny (Iowa). And we questioned if this was something that was done for each holiday or just something special for Thanksgiving. Well, our question was answered when one of my former students, Ashley Van Deest, shared a Snapchat story image of the exact same Gremlin decked out for Christmas parked in Des Moines (Iowa). It kind of makes me want to see if it is decked out for other holidays throughout the year. So, let us know if you see a decorated Gremlin anywhere! Our curiosity is piqued for sure.
